Sandy’s love for BMWs began long before her current pride and joy — a wide-body BMW Z3 2.8 — entered her life. She originally owned a narrow-body 1.9L Z3 in striking blue, but ongoing mechanical issues eventually saw it move on. Still, the spark had been lit.
In 2012, Sandy told her husband Peter that she wanted another BMW, and soon after, she found her current Z3. Originally delivered to Hong Kong before being imported to Australia, the car had plenty of potential… and plenty of work ahead.
Over the last 13 years, it’s been her third car and a full-blown passion project. The journey began with a replacement engine after a cooked radiator took out the original 2.8L power plant. From there, Sandy went full throttle on restoring and upgrading the car — a new diff, upgraded and stiffened sport suspension, and a commitment to making the car her own.
The transformation didn’t stop at mechanics. The roof came from the US, the steering wheel from Malaysia, and the tired burgundy interior was swapped for sleek black seats and trim. Even the exterior was refreshed from a milky silver to its current gleaming finish. The wheels were re machined, shod in performance tyres, and a new radio was installed to modernise the cabin.
What’s next? Sandy still has plans: a new speaker setup, some engine tweaks, a chip mod, and an upgraded inlet manifold and exhaust system are on the wish list.
The Z3 has become more than just a car — it’s a labour of love, rebuilt piece by piece to reflect Sandy’s passion, dedication, and unmistakable BMW spirit.
